Slovenia's Presidency of the Council of the European Union
Slovenian EU Council Presidency comes to an end
On 30 June 2008 Slovenia concluded its Presidency
of the EU Council, which it assumed on 1 January 2008 as the first of the
new EU Member States. We are publishing the first assessment of the achievements
of the Presidency.
About the EU Council Presidency
The Presidency of the Council of the European Union was a great challenge and also a great honour for Slovenia as one of the youngest EU Member States. The programme of the Slovenian Presidency was to a great extent determined already in the 18-month programme of the EU trio Presidency of Germany, Portugal and Slovenia and based on the inherited agenda of the Council of the EU. Slovenia itself defined five priority areas of its action.
The EU Council Presidency also offered an opportunity for the promotion of the country as numerous cultural and promotional events took place in Slovenia as well as in other countries throughout the six-month period. The events were organised by the Slovenian Government Communication Office, the Slovenian Tourist Board and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Embassies of the Republic of Slovenia.
